Daily Innovation is a solo exhibition of MiYoung Sohn’s creative practice in sculpture, collage, video, and interactive public art. She transforms everyday materials to translate her observations to create a new interpretation of her daily experience. “Daily Collage Series” started in response to living on the tip of Cape Cod year-round, navigating solitude and isolation. For over a year, MiYoung worked intuitively, using commonly accessible materials such as paper, paint and glue to make collages daily as a reminder and as a goal to continue her daily practice. A series of “Sculptural Drawings,” composed of straight pins on dark-colored cork panels, transform pins as mark-markers to create dimensional drawings. Another series, “Metal Sculptures,” are solid objects handbuilt out of aluminum foil. They are one-to-one scale objects found from her daily surroundings. A soup can was the very first metal sculpture made during her FAWC Fellowship after fidgeting with leftover foil at many potlucks with fellows. “Wilson (a ball of string)” is a ball of rolled aluminum foil strip measuring 1.65 miles made during the height of Covid lockdown. The exhibition showcases several series spanning from the early conception of ideas during her Fellowship at the Fine Arts Work Center (2001-2003) to most recent works inspired by living on the Outer Cape (since 2021).

Born in Busan, South Korea, MiYoung Sohn came to the United States alone as a child and spent her youth in foster homes in Northern Virginia. She holds a BFA from Parsons School of Design and an MFA in Sculpture from Yale School of Art. Her sculptural works have been exhibited widely, including at Galerie LarocheJoncas, Montreal; PAAM, Provincetown; The Schoolhouse Gallery, Provincetown; Transmitter Gallery, Brooklyn; The Bronx Museum, Bronx; and MoMA PS1, Queens. She is the recipient of numerous grants and fellowships including the Gottlieb Foundation Individual Support Grant (2024), Mass Cultural Council Grant (2023), Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture Fellowship and Fine Arts Work Center Fellowships. MiYoung currently lives and works in Provincetown, MA, where she creates community interactive art projects, teaches workshops, curates exhibitions, and maintains her studio practice.
